Stewart Hubert Bruce
Stewart Hubert (Stu) Bruce of Emo, ON passed away peacefully at Shelley and Mark’s home in Devlin at the age of 85. He was born on October 14, 1935 in Mc Irvine, ON to Jack and Doris (Dolly) Bruce.
At a young age Stu and his mom made their home at Stone Dam, where they built on and lived in their cabin known as the trap shack. There they made their living in winter months trapping beaver, otter, mink and other animals. At the time pelts were worthy of all the hard work and hours spent skinning and stretching hides, not to mention the cold harsh winters this work was done in. Dolly and Stu could relate happenings in the bush in words so descriptive that you had to hear it first hand to appreciate. Hunt, fish and trap but also very soft hearted, couldn’t get rid of the pet rabbits and deer that were eating him out of house and home.
In summer they lived at Harris Lake camp until 1955, then they built Boulder Lodge at Pipestone Lake and then Harris Lake became an outpost for Boulder Lodge. Many American families became lifelong friends with lasting memories.
In 1964 Stu’s wife Darlyne became an extra hand on deck. Three years later a little hand came on the scene daughter Shell who became the star attraction for many at camp. Education was a must for Shell and they moved to Emo.
In 1997 joining the family was Shell’s husband Mark, known by many as Veg who like Stu, loves the outdoors and all it has to offer. Imagine these two comedians in one family.
After the sale of Boulder Lodge Stu worked at many different jobs. One was for working for the MNR parks. At one time he was paired up with a warden to go on patrol catching bad guys. He was asked years later why he quit this job. His answer was, too many of his bad ass friends were the culprits.
Stu retired as a firefighter for the MNR after 23 years of service where he made many more friends and memories
Stu not wanting to be idle went to work as a flagger for road construction until his health became an issue. Lots of volunteering for the Emo Legion where he peeled potatoes, did dishes, deboned fish and also enjoyed entertaining the ladies in the kitchen.
He was often seen in the local coffee shops sipping coffee/tea. The laughter roaring and the BS flowing.
The lake and family gatherings won’t be the same without him. His humorous life stories were entertainment for all young and old. Stu the Legend of Pipestone Lake was able to stay with his daughter Shell and husband Mark’s home in Devlin where he received excellent and loving care, with the help from Home Care and nurses to make it possible to be where he wanted and loved to be.
Stu was predeceased by his wife Darlyne in Oct 2020 and son (sadly miscarried). Father and Mother Jack and Doris Bruce, and brother James (Lititia) Bruce.
Left behind to cherish his memories are his loving daughter Shelley and husband Mark of Devlin, ON. His good friend and bro from Texas Kay Dyal and wife Doris, in-laws Josie Dyck, Denise (Dwight) Becker, Norma Galusha, Herb (Marvel) Elliott, Judy Kaemingh, Oscar Elliott (Bev) sister-in-law Darlene Elliott, several nieces and nephews and all his friends across the United States and Rainy River District.
A celebration of Life and Remembrance will be held on Sunday September 12, 2021 at 2 PM at Shelley and Mark’s residence, 1209 Shute Rd, Devlin.
