Obituary for Sophie Cornell (Spilchuk)

Sophie Cornell (Spilchuk) age 87 of Front Street, Atikokan passed away peacefully withfamily at her side at the Atikokan General Hospital. With sweet memories and heavy hearts the family says goodbye to the last of the 1st generation Canadian born Spilchuk Children.Born to Peter and Mary Spilchuk who immigrated from Ukraine to Canada during the First World War in 1916.

Sophie was born on April 1,1933, the tenth of eleven children. She lived in the family's original home until her passing.In her yonder years Sophie loved sports and was an avid baseball player and bowler. The Beanery located by the Atikokan CN station was a favorite local hot spot, Sophie was a part of the “Bean Queen’s” that would gather and happily await the arrival of the passenger trains. Sophie worked for a short time at the dentist office on Front Street in the 1950’s.

She was united in marriage to Wayne (Dewey) Cornell of Devlin, Ont. in 1963 and moved to Port Arthur to start their family. In 1970 the family moved back to Atikokan and enjoyed life at the small family farm on Front Street.Sophie loved her daily trips uptown and her favorite coffee spots. Thriving on the playful bantering with all the fun personalities in the community gave her great pleasure. She had a great sense of humor and wasn't afraid to let you know what was on her mind like it or not.Sophie enjoyed her Grandchildren and was affectionately named Grama Choo Choo by grandson Dylan. The name stuck and Grama Choo Choo brought joy and laughter to them all. Her love of dance and music was shared and many kitchen dance parties were teaching them her fancy moves. Survived by her four children Valerie Cornell, Eddy (Marie) Cornell, Tommy Cornell all of Atikokan and daughter Janet (Kevin) Hensrud of Thunder Bay. Sister in-law Greta-lynn(Cornell) Salagy, Grandchildren Andrea and Andrew P. Cornell (mother Diane Poirier), Dylan Stewart, Wayne and Stephanie Cornell, Bailey and Travis Hensrud. Great-grand daughter Tessa-Lynne Stewart. Many many loved nieces and nephews Sophie was predeceased by her husband Wayne in 1977. Son Kenneth Glenn in 1965,parents Peter in 1957 and Mary 1969. Three sisters Pauline (Harmeling), Anne (Woods),Olga (Pederson) and Seven brothers Mike, Nick, Bill, Harry, Tony, Nestor and Walter.Brother in-law Eldon Cornell and dear sister in-law Anne (Spilchuk). Companion Bud Jerry in2003.Mom your early morning phone calls will be truly missed.
