Obituary for Shirley Bruyere

In loving memory of our mother, Shirley Ann Bruyere (Labott), who passed away on December 20th, 2022. She was the devoted wife of Rudolph Elmer Bruyere Sr and matriarch of seven boys; Curtis, Timothy Sr, George, Barry, Rudy Jr, Cory & Sandy. Shirley will be deeply missed by all the lives she has touched on Couchiching First Nation & beyond with her kind & gentle way of being.

Our mother was a kind, caring and giving person who always put the needs of her family before her own. She was a strong woman who faced every challenge in her life with courage and dignity and never let anything keep her down.

Growing up, Shirley was essentially an orphan early on in life & was fostered by Dot & Deedee Lyons of Thunder Bay. Shirley attended & survived the residential school system attending the St. Margaret's Indian Residential School near Couchiching First Nation. Upon aging out of the residential school system Shirley was united in marriage to her life long partner Rudolph Bruyere Sr on June 19th, 1965 & they went on to raise seven sons over the course of their marriage.

Shirley aka Labott, Shirl, Gramma Shirley lived for others, especially her grandchildren & great-grandchildren. She would spend endless summer days & nights jumping around on the trampoline, playing diddy-diddy, midnight swimming, playing tennis, camping, fishing, & horsing around with all of her beloved grandchildren & great grand-children. Shirley was a kid at heart & could easily adjust her sense of being to whatever age group she found herself in & always seemed to be able to create a fun environment for those who would frequent her home on Couchiching First Nation. Shirley loved to find the humour in any situation & had a laugh that was contagious & memorable & will be remembered by all who have come to know & share a laugh or two with her throughout her life.

Shirley is survived by her only sibling and sister, Leona Atatise of Lac La Croix, Ontario. Sister in-law and best friend, Shirley Sollen (Charlie) of Fort Erie, Ontario. Sister in-laws Karen Chaboyer & Lila Bruyere. Brother in-law Larry Bruyere (Eileen). Her sons Curtis (Glenda), George, Barry, Rudy Jr, Cory (Renee) and Sandy (Dianna). Grandchildren Fawn, Cassandra, Courtney, Trustin, Jett, Camden, Timothy Jr, Sharise, Cody, Galan, Katie, Reanna, John, Forrest, Makayla, Mackenzie, Aubrey, Griffin, Deacon, Lynden, Rebecca, Ashlyn, Caelynn, Dakota, Kailyn, Anthony, Chloe, Magoo, Kaara, Augie & numerous great grand children & numerous nieces and nephews.
