Obituary for Owen John Toole

It is with heavy hearts that the family of the late Owen Toole announce his passing on November 5th 2022. Owen passed away peacefully with family and friends by his side at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre.

Owen was born on April 14th 1970 in Lindsay Ontario to Stephen and Honoria Toole. Owens parents separated not long after Owen was born and his sister Elizabeth moved with his mother back to Ireland and Owen stayed with his father. Shortly after Stephen met the love of his life Catherine in June of 1971 and it wasn’t too long after that he remarried. Owen thought of Cathy as his mother as she raised him from such a young age and he had a special place in his heart for her. Owen moved around a few times when he was child due to his fathers job with the MNR and would reminisce of the days when he lived in Moosonee. In the summer of 1985 Owen’s father was relocated to Atikokan where Owen attended high school and met his high school sweetheart Karla. Owen and Karla began a family after high school and had 2 children Tyler and Kayla. Owen worked many years at the Atikokan Hotel ‘Old A’ for John and Stephanie Torbiak and grew to love them like family. When Owen wasn’t working he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his friends as well as having fires and let’s not forget setting off fireworks. Owen loved cooking and baking for family and friends and every Sunday someone was sure to get a good cooked meal or some kind of baking. Owen cherished his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. Taking them to the park, bringing homemade cookies any chance he could, and teaching them about wilderness skills even if they were a little too young. For the last 5 years Owen worked at Foodland after the closing of the Atikokan hotel. He enjoyed working at Foodland which we believe was because he got see a lot of familiar faces and chat with so many fellow community members. Anyone that knew Owen knew he was a kind gentle soul with a big heart especially for his grandchildren.

Owen was predeceased by his mother in law Marcia, his love of his life Karla, sister in laws Tammy and Melissa, and brother in law Andrew. Left to mourn are his parents Stephen and Cathy, his children Tyler (Jessica) Kayla, his grandchildren Jake, Josie, Jaden and Libby, his sister in laws Bonnie (Terry) Cindy (Jason) his many nieces and nephews as well as his close friends. Owen had a kind heart and he will be sadly missed by many.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday November 12, 2022 from 6-9 p.m. at the Atikokan Royal Canadian Legion.
