Obituary for Murray William Weir
With his loving family by his side, a true Irishmen entered the gates of heaven on December 26, 2022, at the age of 74. He had the bluest eyes, and kindest smile. He loved a good drink and told a great story. He liked everyone he met and everyone liked him. He never missed an opportunity to help someone, and you had no problems when he was around.
Murray William Weir was born March 8, 1948 to Harper and Fern (Whalen) Weir in Fort Frances, ON. At the age of twelve, Murray moved to Thunder Bay, ON where a few short years later, he met a girl named Linda Carol Harkema. Murray and Linda were united in marriage on September 20, 1969. They moved to Fort Frances in 1970 when Murray began his policing career with the Fort Frances Police Department, a career that would span 30 years. Together, Murray and Linda welcomed three children, Matthew, Travis, and Stephanie. For 53 years, they raised their family, they laughed, they leaned on each other while they faced all that life had for them, and they took care of each other.
In 1999, Murray retired from the Ontario Provincial Police, and finally had the time to do things he enjoyed like fishing, spending time at the cabin, camping with family, weekend getaways with Linda to concerts and casinos and even playing poker with Tanya Tucker. Murray loved his fall hunting trips with his sons. Time spent with his friends Clint Sisco, Ovide Laroque, Phil Donald, Pete Druin, Gary Vittie and Ken Richardson were always good for a story and a laugh. Murray always looked forward to morning coffee with Clint, Gary, Ken, Pete and Paul.
As Murray’s six grandchildren grew, his weekend casino trips became weekends in various arenas, watching them play, making sure they had some money for the canteen, and people watching from parking lots while Linda had a fast look around the shops.
He was a treasured husband, an admired father, and adored grandfather, trusted friend, and more recently becoming a great grampa to Everly Sarah Mae. The footprint he left in the memories of all who knew him will keep him with us.
Murray was predeceased by his parents, Harper and Fern Weir. Left to mourn Murray are his wife Linda, his children Matthew (Sandra), Travis (Shanna), and Stephanie (Jason Allen), his grandchildren Madyson (Adam) Weir, Macey Weir, Kieran (Katelin) Weir, Brenna Weir, Colten Allen and Chloe Allen, and great grand daughter Everly Lang. Murray is also survived by his sister Judy (Frank) Buchik, mother in law Mary Harkema, and sister in law Nancy Harkema.
As per Murray’s wishes there will be no formal service and cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fort Frances Splash Park, or Fort Frances Salvation Army.
