Obituary for Marjorie Advent (Clement)
With sorrow, the family of Marjorie Florence Advent (née Clement) announce her death at
Rainycrest on November 21, 2019.
Marjorie was born on October 16, 1928, at the family homestead of Four Pines in North Branch,
Ontario, to Albert and Estha (née Nielsen) Clement, where she grew up with her siblings Don,
Max, and Maxine.
As a young girl, Marj attended both Dewart and Sifton schools and then onto Fort Frances High
School, graduating at age 14. Her first paying job at the age of 15 was teaching at Morson in a
converted log house. In 1946 she graduated from North Bay Teachers’ College, and returned to
the Rainy River District to teach at a number of one room schools as well as Robert Moore and
McIrvine in Fort Frances, before heading to BC as principal of the Kettle Valley School. After her
marriage, she taught at several one-room schools and was a long-time primary teacher at St
Michael’s School, Rainy River. She finished her career supply teaching at Our Lady of the Way in
Stratton.
She married John Advent on August 27, 1952, and they lived in the teacherage at the Dewart
School until John’s Veteran’s Land Agreement came through. They then moved to the ‘Anderson
Farm’ north of Stratton and ran it as a dairy farm for 25 years until their retirement in 1977. They
had five children: Debra; Janice (Ian Gordon); Howard (Lori Cress); Kathryn (Dennis Beauchene)
and Vicki (Gareth Parry); and two grandchildren, Andrew and Kristofer Advent. After the farm was
sold, they moved to Stratton to the former Bindas home. In 2003, they relocated to Fort Frances
and eventually moved to Rainycrest.
Marjorie was predeceased by her parents; her husband, John; her daughters, Debra, and Kathy;
and her brother Don.
Marj was was an active member of the Women’s Institute, Stratton Seniors, and Stratton United
Church. She was a creative and devoted teacher, avid reader, relentless Bingo and Cribbage
player, and prolific knitter. Music was a source of enjoyment and comfort for her whole life.
Honorary pallbearers are Cyndy Petsnick, Andrew and Kristofer Advent, and Merv Ahrens,
Friends and family will gather at the Stratton Millennium Hall on Thursday, November 28th, at
11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Society, Canadian Cancer
Society, CNIB, or a charity of your choice.
