Obituary for Marie Helen Alice Bates (Watts)

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Marie Helen Alice Bates (Watts) on June 6, 2020 at the Atikokan General Hospital..

Marie was born February 8, 1933 to George and Bertha Watts of Chapple Twp, Ontario. She met and married the love of her life Joseph Stanley Leonard Bates (Stan) on May 10, 1951. Marie is survived by her children Robert and Brian of Atikokan, ON, George (Donna) of Finland, ON, Shirley (Harold) McQuaker of Emo, ON and Carolann (Dale) Thompson of Edson AB.

She will be lovingly remembered by her eight grandchildren Shane (Rachel), Dale, Jordon, Melissa, Kyle (Tamara), Wade (Susan), Steven (Kyla), Stacey (Ryan); 13 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

After 23 years Stan and Marie moved their construction and cement business from Mather Twp to Atikokan in September 1974, where they remained in business until Stan's passing in march of 2012.

Marie and son Brian took over and continued the business until her passing on June 6, 2020. They also owned the Blue Lantern Lodge at Manion Lake, which was a place of business and many family get-togethers.

Marie was predeceased by her husband Stan on March 3, 2012, daughter in law Kathy (2003), her brother Bill Watts 2010 and sister in law Beverly Watts in 2008.

Marie always enjoyed having family get-togethers, loved to cook and bake, which everyone enjoyed. Their office was also a place to stop in for a coffee and visiting. They loved to get together and play cards with Bill and Beverly, that sometimes went on until the wee hours of the morning. Marie enjoyed her flowers, picking berries and making jams and jellies. She also loved making quilts for the family.

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. We will cherish and hold her dear our memories of her.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Atikokan General Hospitals for their care and compassion during her stay.

A service of celebration and remembrance will be announced at a later date. If desired memorial donations may be made in Marie’s memory to the Atikokan General hospital by check c/o Northridge Funeral home, box 89, Emo, ON P0W 1E0.
