Obituary for Laurene Orcellia "Buddie" Hannam
Laurene (Buddie) Orcellia Hannam(nee Budreau)October 19, 1925 –February 7, 2021
Buddie passed away peacefully with family beside her at the Health Centre in her beloved Rainy River on Feb. 7, 2021. She was born in Rainy River to Laurence and Ethel Budreau on Oct. 19, 1925 and lived her early years there. The family moved to Winnipeg when she was a young girl and she completed high school and secretarial school. She was the youngest in a family of four with a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins and many friends who she continued friendships with into her 80’s.Her parents alsoowned a tourist camp in Morson and she visited often in the summer, travelling on the train from Winnipeg. On one of those trips she attended a friend’s wedding in Rainy River where she met Bud Hannam and soon they were dancing at their own wedding on Nov. 3, 1951. Rainy River was her home again. Sons Kim and Chris were born there and Buddie happily lived there the rest of her life.She worked for Brunn Ins., the Bridge Office and then the High School office for many years until her retirement. She loved her job, the students and her coworkers and participated in many school activities, always looking out for the kids and new teachers coming to town. Mom was an accomplished piano and organ player and in younger years taught piano and dance. She loved playing for school events, fashion shows and everything else that was going on in town.She was active in Job’s Daughters and the Eastern Star, the Hospital Auxiliary, Cdn Cancer Society, the Red Cross Society and she was a driving force working tirelessly for the Long Term Care Unit and new hospital in Rainy River. She was a devout Christian and member of the United Church and valued her role in the UCW and singing in the church choir. Mom loved summers at the lake, reading, time with friends and family and wasGrandma extraordinaire. She lived a big, full, busy life, she was kind, compassionate and inclusive to all. She didn’t take up space but she did leave the world a better place.Buddie is survived by her two sons and their families: Kim and Maxine of Winnipeg and their sons Matthew and Elliott (Ashton)Chris and Melissa of Calgary and their daughters Jordan (Geoff and their son McLean) and Mikaela.She is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
She was predeceased by husband Gordon (Bud) Hannam in 2012, parents Ethel & Laurence Budreau, brothers Colin and Donald (Doreen) Budreau and sister Forest (Roland) Horn.The family plans a graveside service in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in the summer as Covid permits. Mom left us with this blessing she always carried with her .... An Irish Blessing ...May the road rise up to meet you, May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rain fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again. May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.We are enormously grateful to the wonderful people of the Rainy River LTC who loved and cared for our Mother over the past years of her life.
