Obituary for Josef Altbauer
Josef Altbauer
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Josef Altbauer announces his passing on Friday Nov 8th 2019 at 11:40pm at the Emo Hospital.
Joe was born March 12th 1937 in Austria to Jurij and Amilija Altbauer. Joe lived in Austria with his mother , father as well as his brothers Mihael, Branko, Rajko and sister Nada until he moved to Canada in 1957.
Joe met Elaine Gallinger in 1959 and the two of them were united in marriage in 1960. In 1967 they welcomed their son Robert and their family was complete.
Joe had several jobs throughout his life. His first job when he came to Canada was cutting wood on Bigsby Island with a swede saw. Joe and co-worker saved their first few pay checks to buy a chain saw because that was a heck of a lot easier then using the swede saw. Joe also worked guiding on some of the most beautiful lakes in Ontario. Joe also worked for Ontario Hydro and Canada Post but his true calling was carpentry. Joe built several homes and structures in the Nestor Falls and Sioux Narrows area with long time friend and co-worker Willard Lougheed. Joe will be forever remembered for his meticulous work. Joe used to say "spend time and do it right the first time or it takes just as long to do it wrong as right". Joe was never one to cut corners and would work as long as he had to, to make sure each job met his stamp of approval.
When Joe and Elaine parted ways Joe bought his home on Crow Lake- his lake side haven. He used to love to sit outside on his deck and listen to the sounds of nature or work on projects in his garage. Joe didn't like to sit idle. In Joes later years when mobility was tougher he would use his steiner tractor to get around the yard, visitors would often find him puttering around the yard on his "Tinker Toy".
Joe will be missed dearly by his Son Robert and daughter in law Connie. Brother Rajko and family in Germany, Sister Nada and family in Slovenia, ex-wife Elaine Altbauer, Grandchildren: Jeremy, Kyle, Ashley, Brandon, Megan, Emily and families. Eight Great Grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and especially the people he called friends.
Joe was predeceased by his father, mother, brothers Mihael and Branko.
Special thanks to the Emo hospital staff and doctors that took such good care of Joe the last few years, Joe sang their praises often.
A Celebration of life will be held at Northridge Funeral Home Friday November 15th at 11am, a luncheon will follow.
