Isaac “Ike” Dyck – March 29, 1927 – May 26, 2022
Ike Dyck of Rainy River, Ontario, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 26, 2022, at the grand age of 95, in Emo, Ontario.
Ike lost Laura, his sweetheart of 58 years, in January 2008, but today leaves to grieve his large, loving family, including his older brother John (Betty), his five children, Garry (Carol), Darryl (Corey), Nadine (Barry), Kevin (Kristin), and Stuart (Colleen); 18 grandchildren, Melanie (Ray), Kelly (Wendel), Ryan (Stephanie), Leanne (Vince), Caitlyn (Charles), Jamie, Madeline (Allan), Megan, Natasha (Mitch), Isaac (Destinee), Nikki, Jeff, Vanessa, Jennie (Nico), Shane, Riley, Chloe, and Sara; and 21 great-grandchildren, Julia, Avery, Charlie, Bella, Natalie, Ava, Olivia, Danny, Colton, Anika, Sophie, Audrey, Taylor, Henry, Charlie, Norah, Helen, Felix, Josiah, Jett, and Jude.
Ike was born in Winkler, Manitoba, on March 29, 1927, to Jacob and Helena Dyck, as the youngest to his four older siblings, Peter (Mary), Ann (Tim), Albert (Lillian), and John (Betty). As a boy, Ike enjoyed working in the machine shop, riding his bicycle, and playing trumpet. Ike and Laura met for the first time as children, when Ike was just 10 and Laura seven. Although they didn’t start dating until they met up again in high school, Ike said he knew when he met Laura as kids, that she would be the woman he married.
Ike and Laura married on August 20, 1950, in Altona, Manitoba, and started their family the following year. After getting married, Ike trained to be a grade-school teacher, and taught in various communities in southern Manitoba, before he and Laura moved to Rainy River, Ontario to put down roots.
Ike taught shop and driving in Rainy River until he retired in 1984 at the age of 57. He spent his retirement with Laura and their family, doing all the things he loved, including reading, woodworking, building model airplanes, snow machining, hunting deer, boating and fishing at their cabin on Lake of the Woods and on the Rainy River, working on cars and small engines, and going to the stock car races in Emo with his kids and grandkids. After Laura suffered an aneurysm in 1992, Ike lovingly cared for her and their home for 16 years, and took on everything from cooking to keeping up her garden in the summer.
Ike was well known and loved around town. He is fondly remembered for going for coffee with his friends every morning, and hosting his family for his annual Christmas program. The impact of Ike’s warm smile, contagious laugh, and caring and generous heart will transcend his family and those who loved him for generations to come.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday June 1, 2022 at 1 p.m. from the Rainy River Evangelical Covenant Church. Interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery to take place at a later date.
