Obituary for Hazel Leona Wilde

Mom was born in Fort Frances on November 9, 1919 and passed away at Rainycrest Home for the Aged on November 24, 2020. Her parents were Frances Maud Carnduff and Jessie Smeeth. She was baptized on April 9, 1920 with Pastor W. E. Egan officiating.

She lived for a time in Miscampbell Township and eventually moved to Fort Frances where she attended school.

She was united in marriage on September 27, 1940 to Bill Wilde. They had met at the local skating rink, a popular place for the young folk back then. He was her only boyfriend so it must have been love at first sight as they celebrated 56 years together at the time of his passing.

Mom loved to swim especially since buying their island on the North Arm of Rainy Lake in 1951. She took her last swim in 2018. It took lots of hard work but the cabin was her refuge from the time the ice melted in the spring until just before freeze-up in the fall.

Mom and dad square danced for over 50 years both here in the Fort and at the Sunshine Park in Harlingen, Texas. They also traveled to Acapulco, Mexico for several years and developed many long lasting friendships with other Snow Birds seeking refuge from the cold.

Mom was dedicated to the Zion Lutheran Church which she faithfully attended sitting in the same pew with her close knit friends up until the time she was hospitalized. She would also look forward to her Bible Study meetings.

Mom led a very healthy lifestyle and remained in her home which they built until last year. She celebrated her 100th birthday while in LaVerendye Hospital of which two things stood out. One being her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren celebrating with her. The second being Dr. Halverson and her two daughters bringing a chocolate cupcake with a candle to celebrate this milestone. Mom said it was the best chocolate cupcake she had ever eaten. How we can all learn about sharing from these two little angels.

Mom was predeceased by her parents, her sister Mildred Bolzan, her brother Bertram Smeeth and her daughter-in-law Bonnie Wilde.

She is survived by her two sons: Garry and wife Pia and his children Karen (Pastor Kevin) Josiah, Halen, Tilia, Lily and Isaiah Peltomaki and his son David (April) and his son Macarthur; Randy and Carole and their children Pamela (Bill) Hamilton, Connor and Erin, Candice (Wayne) and her children Stephanie and Wyatt.

She is survived by her sister Ruth Viddal of Atikokan, sister-in-law Marjorie Smeeth of Fort Frances along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and due to covid restrictions, a service will be held at a later date.

The family would like to thank Dr. Halverson and the nursing staff in the LaVerendrye hospital and also Dr. Moorehouse and the nursing staff while she was in Rainycrest.

Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or Rainycrest Home for the Aged Activation Fund, c/o Northridge Funeral Home Ltd, Box 89, Emo, ON, P0W 1E0.
