Obituary for Germaine Stevens (Hacault)

Germaine Stevens-Suchard (nee Hacault)
October 16, 1937 –December 4, 2022

Germaine was born at St. Boniface Hospital on October 16, 1937. Raised on the family farm, she attended Bruxelles Ste. Marie Elementary School, taking piano lessons from grade 3 to 8. She boarded at the convent in Notre Dame De Lourdes for grade 9. Germaine completed school in Bruxelles than remained home for 6 years to help with the housework and caring for younger brothers and sister as she was from a very large family of 17 children.

Germaine started working outside the home in 1959. In 1960, Germaine took a Licensed Practical Nursing Course at St. Boniface School for nursing. While continuing her nursing profession, she joined a number of musical bands and played in many bars entertaining the numerous crowds around hotels in Winnipeg and Kenora.

She worked in Kenora and Thunder Bay then returned to Winnipeg in 1977 with her daughter Rhonda to be closer to family. She retired from nursing in approx. 1991 and moved to Redditt, ON. Where she managed a small store. She then moved back into her actual farmhouse where she grew up in Manitoba. When that became a little too much to manage, she moved into a house in Holland, MB. After losing her partner Joey, she settled into the Victoria Manor where she reconnected with family and old school “chums”.
Germaine thoroughly enjoyed hockey, baseball and music. Many memories were made by family, friends and acquaintances as she played her accordion or tickled the keys. She was extremely talented and had a musical ear most of her life and could play songs by listening to them on the radio.

She donated much of her time playing music for senior homes, churches, fairs, family gatherings and other requests. Even when she was uncomfortable driving that far anymore and traded in her piano for a lighter keyboard, she managed to arrange rides to “gigs". She accepted a menial compensation, if any. She preferred to just accept gas and or a meal.
Unfortunately, covid times took much of this away and as she lost some close people and became more “Stuck in her apartment” She agreed to move closer to her daughter Rhonda Stevens-Bekesi and son-in-law Shane Bekesi and grandchildren. She loved spending regularly time with her daughter, grand daughters and great grand children.

By moving in 2020, she was able to gain more independence by having more services and stores available in Fort Frances. She was able to spend many holidays with her immediate family.
On December 4, 2022 Germaine’s kind loving and tough spirit, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side was called upon by her savior. The angels brought her up to waiting loved ones. She remained independent and strong as long as she could, but her body could no longer keep up.
She will be laid to rest in the spring/summer of 2023 in Bruxelles, Manitoba next to her Maman as requested.
