Duane Huntley
The family of Duane Alvin Huntley, 65, sadly announce his peaceful passing with his family by his side on Sunday, October 16, 2022 at the Atikokan (ON) General Hospital.
Duane was born in Atikokan on April 24, 1957 to Alvin (Frank) and Stella (nee Gouliquer) Huntley.
Duane was always generous, very kind and he had a gentle nature. He would help anyone he could. He loved animals and as a child he would help to look after the pets at home.
In his younger days Duane loved summer camping with the family, boating, and fishing. Duane spent many happy days on the lake fishing with his dad and his brother Mike. It was special when family and friends could join in the fun.
He loved many other sports as well. When Duane was a young boy he was a great hockey player. Many hours were spent playing hockey at the outdoor rinks. He travelled to many tournaments with his brother Mike and the family. Duane also enjoyed playing baseball and especially loved to run the bases. He was a great pitcher - with his dad coaching and his brother as catcher, the games were pretty exciting for the whole family.
Duane loved music, especially from the 1970s and the 1980s. He played his guitar and liked to sit downstairs at home and play his music. He even sang a bit. We could often hear his tunes playing on his ghetto blaster when we came over for a visit.
As Duane got older, he loved to sit in his favourite rocking chair on the deck of his mother’s home enjoying coffee with friends and family. He would listen to anyone who had a story to share.
Duane enjoyed watching many older TV shows and he loved his movies. He always liked to cook. One of the nice things he did for his mom was to cook special meals for her at home. It was something that she always enjoyed and one thing we know that she will miss!
When he was a young man living in Atikokan, Duane worked at a variety of jobs. He loved to learn new skills. Duane started work in the guard house at Steep Rock Iron Mines. Then he was a bushworker with his brother-in-law Mel in the Seine River area; he also worked in forestry with Great Lakes in Ignace, and on the rider crew with Comstock International in Winnipeg.
When the mines closed in Atikokan, Duane joined his mom and dad to travel out west to Elkford, BC looking for work. There he and his father worked together in the coal plant at Fording River. Later the family relocated to Coleman, Alberta in the Crowsnest Pass, where his father worked several years at Line Creek Resources.
After the death of his father, Duane and his mother, returned to Atikokan. He tried his hand at building houses with carpenter John Guy Gagnon, then travelled west again, to Spruce Grove this time, to work a short time as a linesman with Alberta Power. He finally returned home where he lived happily with his mother until he passed.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother Stella, his sisters Barbara (Jim Beckingham, Laura McLeod) and Marion (Garth Dyck, Allen, Taylor Sigurdson), and his brother Michael (Valerie, Kerri Lyn, Ryan). He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, Laura McLeod (Alannah, Jarred, Keyanna), Pamela (Trent Mann, Jasper, Tucker, Badger), Melanie (Pierre Mallinson, Abigail, Jayden), Marianne (Sean Berry), Kerri Lynn, Ryan, and Allen. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law Melvin Kaartinen.
Duane was pre-deceased by his father, Alvin (Frank) Huntley, sister Lena Kaartinen, niece Crystal McLeod, and grandmother Mary Ann Gouliquer.
As per Duane’s wishes cremation will take place with a private family service to be held at a later date. Online condolences may be made at www.NorthridgeFuneralHome.com
