Obituary for Dorothy Lorna Brown
Dorothy Lorna Brown (August 17, 1928 – December 10, 2022)
With great sadness, our family announces the passing of Dorothy Brown (nee Ahrens), also affectionately known to many as “Dot”. Dorothy, aged 94, passed away at the Emo Health Centre where she had resided since February 2018.
Dorothy was born in Barwick, Ontario to Heinrich (Henry) & Violet Ahrens. She was the fifth of ten children. On July 10, 1946, Dorothy married Raymond Brown. Together, they made their home 8 miles north of Stratton in Pattullo township where they raised their family of six children. They celebrated 45 years of marriage shortly before Ray’s passing in 1991. After retiring from their busy lives of farming and logging , Dorothy and Ray moved to Emo in 1989. Dorothy remained in their retirement home until 2017.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Dennis (Beth) Brown, Cynthia (Donald) Bolen, daughter-in-law Mary Brown, Joyce (Wayne) Pollard, Janice (Creston) Dorie, and Pam Peters (Jeff Litzenberger). She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, one sister Ella (Lawrence) Desserre, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, 8 siblings (Violet, Myrtle, Otto, Mansel, Mervin, Howard, Merveline & Shirley), her husband Raymond, her son Donald earlier this year, grandsons Ryan Bolen and Laurie Brown and great grand-daughter Miami Brown.
Dot had an amazing green thumb. She always had beautiful flowers, seeds started in her home in the winter months, and a very successful garden. She could take a slip off a plant and propagate almost anything to flourish in her home and gardens. Her talents did not stop there; they also carried into the kitchen where she was always cooking, baking and canning. There was not a visitor to enter her home that was not offered fresh buns that melted in your mouth, a piece of her amazing matrimonial cake, or had the pleasure of her whipping up a fresh meal if she was expecting you. Many family members also cherish the paper tole masterpieces that she created, the afghans and slippers that she knitted, and the countless memories from precious hours assembling jigsaw puzzles together over coffee or tea. Dorothy was active for many years with the Emo United Church, loved to spend time outdoors walking and cross-country skiing with her late friend Mame, and in her day, was quite the card shark.
A huge thank you to the staff of Emo Health Centre for the care and compassion that they provided to our mom. She held a special place in her heart for retired nurse & volunteer, Helen, and Reverend Fluit. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada.
As per Mom’s wishes, there will be no funeral at this time. A graveside service will take place in the spring at the Stratton cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Northridge Funeral Home Ltd.
