Obituary for Doreen Velda Bodnar (Wolstenholme)

Doreen Bodnar (Wolstenholme)

Doreen Velda Bodnar (Wolstenholme), age 85, passed away peacefully on the evening of New Year’s Day with her family by her side.

Doreen was born July 14th, 1936 in Emo, Ontario at Fulford’s Nursing Home to Elsie (Cann) and Walter Wolstenholme. She grew up on the farm in Kingsford Township, where she held fond memories of her childhood. Later on, she met the love of her life Bill, while they both worked at La Verendrye General Hospital and they were later wed on September 14th, 1957. In 1964, they welcomed a daughter Nina. After her birth, Doreen took an early retirement from her nursing career to be a full-time mother and homemaker.

She could usually be found knitting or crocheting a new doily for one of grandpa’s handmade tables or spending time in the kitchen cooking. In the summer, she would grow a wide variety of vegetables and had a beautiful abundance of flowers which she took great pride in. Throughout her lifetime, she would spend hours canning fruits and vegetables from their garden and there was never a shortage of pyrohy or cabbage rolls for anyone as she would frequently make several dozen at a time.

Doreen spent her final years at Rainy Crest, where she became everyone’s baba. Even as her memory began to fade, she still maintained the same warm and caring demeanor that drew everyone to her.

She will be lovingly remembered by her family; daughter Nina and son-in-law Brent (Sokoliuk), grandchildren Rebecca (Donny) and Jordan, and great grandsons Parker and Beckham. She is also survived by brothers- in- law Edward, Norman (Lecea), sisters-in-law Edith, Lillian, Cheryl (Tony), Ann Cain, Evelyn Myers (Frank) and Eleanor Johanson (Steve), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her cousin whom she cherished her time with dearly, Marian Sinclair (Rick).

She was predeceased by her husband William, in 2019. Also gone before her are brothers-in- law John, Michael, Paul, Miron, Raymond Cain, Leon Swire, Dwayne Dawkins and sisters- in- law Olga Dawkins and Helen. She was also predeceased by her parents Elsie and Walter, and in-laws Joseph and Dominia Bodnar.

A private family ceremony will take place due to COVID-19 restrictions, and internment at a later date. If family and friends desire to do so a cheque may be made to "Riverside Health Care in Care of Activation" which will go towards the improvement and maintenance of the gardens at Rainy Crest that Baba so loved to take part in. Cheques may be sent c/o Northridge Funeral Home, Box 89, Emo, ON POW 1EO.

We would like to thank the staff at Rainy Crest, specifically Dr. Moorhouse, the nurses and staff in the Special Care Unit. Knowing she was so well taken care of, especially in her final days is a comfort to us all.
