Obituary for Cheryl Ann Handberg (Cross)
CHERYL ANN (CROSS) HANDBERG AUGUST 6, 1952 - SEPTEMBER 29, 2022
It is with profound sadness and broken hearts, that the family of Cheryl Handberg announce her sudden passing on September 29th at her home on Lac La Croix, Ontario.
The 3rd of 9 children, Cheryl was born in Fort Frances on August 6, 1952, to the late Bill and Joan Cross. She was raised in Crozier, attending Alberton Central School and then Fort Frances High School.
Reading was her most loved pastime. Anyone who knew her, knew she was never without a book on the go.
At the age of 16, Cheryl gained employment at Campbell’s Cabins and Trading Post on Lac La Croix. It was here she would meet the love of her life, Jay Handberg. They married on November 7, 1970. So began their lifetime at the lake. They would soon welcome their sons, Campbell and Curtis.
For decades, side by side, they would run the business. She had a work ethic that would rival anyone half her age.
La Croix holds such fond memories for so many and Cheryl was a wonderful host. She always said she loved to share the place that she loved so much with everyone who wished to visit.
Faced with the adversity of a cancer diagnosis in June, Cheryl met the challenge with the strength she was known for. She accepted it without complaint or self pity, but determined to do it her way. The cancer was aggressive; her battle short. The suddenness with which it ended, has left us with our hearts laid bare.
She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband of 51 years, Jay; her son Curtis and his wife Erika, and their children Olivia and Robert; Granddaughter Kennedi Handberg; and Granddaughter Katie Eide and her children Waylon and Blake. Her grandchildren were the loves of her life.
She also leaves her siblings, Wendy (Don) Potter, Tom (Sandi) Cross, Karen (Mark) Hagen, Mike (Kayleen) Cross and Pat Cross, numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins.
Cheryl was predeceased by her son Campbell; parents, Bill and Joan Cross; sister, Nancy Howden and brother-in-law, Robert Howden; brother, Brad Cross; sister, Lynne Wiebe and brother-in-law, John Handberg.
Honourary pallbearers are her many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in Cheryl’s memory.
A service will be held Saturday October 8, 2022 at 11 am at Northridge Funeral Home.
To say that we will miss you is an understatement. But that we could have said goodbye. You have taken a piece of each of our hearts with you. Fly free. Rest easy. We love you, Cheryl.
