Obituary for Carol Ann Thompson

Carol Ann Thompson (Bates) passed away after a long illness at the age of 64 on Friday, November 25, 2022, in Atikokan, Ontario, with family by her side.

Carol Ann, the youngest daughter of five siblings, was born to Stan and Marie Bates (Watts) on November 19, 1958, in Emo, Ontario. She spent her early years in Finland, Ontario until her family relocated to Atikokan in September of 1974, where she attended high school and met the love of her life, husband Dale Thompson. Carol Ann and Dale were married on July 3, 1980, and that same year they began their lives together in Edson, AB, where they remained for 34 years building their careers and family. They welcomed their son, Jordan, on July 23, 1982, and later, their granddaughter, Emma, on October 20, 2005. Carol Ann adored Jordan and Emma, and being their mother and grandmother brought her great joy in life.

Carol Ann’s career began with Coal Valley Mine, later working for the union and Alberta Opportunities, finally retiring in 2013 before moving back to Atikokan in 2014. Much of her time throughout the years was spent bringing her family and friends together through her cooking and baking, which all who knew her looked forward to enjoying. She enjoyed many hobbies, and her love of the outdoors brought her enjoyment in sitting around the fire, grouse hunting, fishing and blueberry picking to later make homemade jam. However, of all the ways in which Carol Ann filled her spare time, it was quilting that was her true passion, which she shared with her family through the many quilts they received as gifts from her. For all who knew and loved Carol Ann, they knew she was generous with her time, took great pleasure in spoiling her loved ones with the products of her crafts, and most of all, cherished her family.

Carol Ann is survived by: husband, Dale Thompson (Atikokan); son, Jordan (Stephanie) Thompson (Edson); granddaughter, Emma Thompson (Edson); brothers, Robert Bates (Atikokan) and George Bates (Finland); sister, Shirley (Harold) McQuaker (Emo); sisters-in-law, Marlene (Scott) Thompson-Lees (Williams Lake), Elaine Hnatiuk (Atikokan) and Doris Thompson (Atikokan); brother-in-law, Roy Thompson (Edson); and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.

She was predeceased by: grandparents, George and Bertha Watts, Sidney and Pearl Bates; parents, Stan and Marie Bates; brother, Brian Bates; mother-in-law, Dorothy Thompson; brothers-in-law, Gordon Thompson and Glen Thompson; sisters-in-law, Cathy Bates and Donna Bates; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
