Obituary for Bernice Isabel Campbell (Meyers)
Bernice Campbell | June 9, 1928 - August 20, 2021
Bernice Campbell passed away on August 20 at the age of 93, leaving her family & friends with a lifetime of cherished memories to ease the loss. Bernice was born on June 9, 1928. She experienced an idyllic childhood with loving parents, Stella & Mark Meyers and a beloved younger brother, Gordon, in the small and tightly-knit community of Twin Falls, Ontario. When Bernice graduated from high school,the family moved to Emo and Mark
purchased what would become the iconic Meyer’s Clothing on Front St. Bernice moved to Winnipeg to attend nursing training at the Grace Hospital.
Nursing was her lifelong calling and she was at her best when in a caregiver role.
While serving as a Nursing Sister at RCAF Station in Claresholm, Alberta, Bernice met her husband, Don Campbell, of Cape Breton, NS. He was a dashing RCAF Pilot and her one true love. The two married on August 20, 1953 and started a family. Bernice was a wonderful and caring mother to Mark,Russell & Valerie. They adored their mother and she offered them unconditional support, raising them to have deep roots and strong wings.
Don’s career as a pilot meant that the family moved often. A highlight was 5 amazing years in Nairobi, Kenya. Throughout it all, Bernice revealed herself to be an expert ‘mover’, coordinating operations seamlessly and successfully. However, Emo and nearby Clearwater Lake is the ‘home’ to which she returned every summer to holiday with her family. Decades of summers were spent with Gordon, Adele, Kim & Grant and their many dear friends in Gloomy Bay. When Don passed away suddenly in 1981, Bernice made a decision to retire to Emo as planned. Don’s memory was always close and she missed him very much.
In 1982, Bernice became a grandmother, a role to which she wasextraordinarily well suited. Patient, kind and g enerous to a fault, Bernice loved her wee grands and, when apart, prayed for their health, happiness and well-being. Bernice also showed great kindness over the years to many children in her community to whom she was affectionately known as Aunt Bea. Bernice’s 6 grandchildren, Brooke, Brie, Donny, Fraser, Kevin and Michelle will always hold fond memories of their grandma along with her 8 great grandchildren.
For over three decades, Bernice immersed herself in her many friendships and community life. She played a vital role through her association with St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Emo Hospital Auxiliary, and through countless events and initiatives requiring a generous heart and helping hands. Bernice’s civic contribution was recognized when she was honored with the Emo Senior Citizen of the Year Award. Bernice was predeceased by her parents, Stella and Mark Meyers, her husband, Donald Campbell, her brother, Gordon Meyers and sister-in-law, Adele Meyers. She is survived by her children Mark (Debbie), Russell (Karen), Valerie (Warren), nephew Grant (Lucinda) and niece, Kim (Geoff), her 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Valerie, Russell and Mark are deeply grateful for the exceptional care provided by the team at the Emo Health Center and for Dr. Kim Meyers who has supported Bernice in her journey with dementia. Bernice navigated her final years with courage. To all those who contributed to her well being, we thank you. As Bernice would say, God bless. Funeral arrangements will be made in consideration of current public health guidelines and will be communicated at a later date.

Campbell’s name to the Emo Hospital Auxiliary through the Emo Health Centre.
