Obituary for Alton Murl "Al" Settle
Alton Merle Settle, 79, of Nestor Falls, ON passed away on Fri, Nov 25, 2022 at LaVerendre Hospital in Fort Frances, ON. He was born on January 19, to the late Alton Lee and Vera Settle of Oklahoma City, OK. He attended school at Mill Creek, OK and after graduating enlisted in the US Navy, where he served 4 years. His ship, the USS Robert H. McCard, was involved in several Mediterranean cruises and he got to see European cities, traverse the Suez Canal, and experience port cities in the Middle East as well as India and Pakistan. Many of the places he visited are in the news today. His ship was also involved in the blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
After an honourable discharge from the Navy, Al returned to Oklahoma and worked for the Federal Aviation Administration as an Electrical Technician/ Engineer for 34 years.
Al was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a patron of Lakeview Lodge for years and became friends with the owners, Ray and Mary Haggberg. After Mary became a widow, she and Al’s friendship grew and they were married on March 13, 2000. Together they continued to operate Lakeview Lodge for the past 22 years.
Al also enjoyed drag racing and was a King when it came to adding after market parts, whether it was to one of his cars or bikes and also included putting a 426 Hemi in a classic Dodge pickup. He also enjoyed participating in Moto Cross and Enduro racing.
Al is survived by his wife Mary Haggberg of Nestor Falls, as well as a large extended, blended family of sons, daughters and spouses as well as grandchildren, great grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and a host of cousins of all ages. All of whom he loved with no reservations, exactly as they are. Al will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his family and many friends.
Celebrations of his life will be held at Lakeview Lodge in the summer and in Oklahoma in the fall of 2023 where his ashes will be interred alongside his beloved Daddy.
Al was an avid participant in the Alzheimer’s Society of Kenora/ Rainy River Districts ‘Fall Ride For Memories’ for several years as his health permitted and was happy he could held this great cause with his love of biking.
