Obituary for Allan "Al" Wasney Sr.

Allan B Wasney (Al Senior)

Allan Wasney was born July 27, 1935, in Garson, Manitoba, and passed away February 22, 2020, at home in Atikokan, Ontario.

He was predeceased by parents Mike and Nancy Wasney, wife Helen Wasney (nee Both), grandson Cody Wasney, in laws Carol and Carl Sundlin, Robert Light

Al is survived by Son Allan Wasney, Jr., daughter Pam, husband Rick Drobot, daughter Cheryl, husband John Ackert, grandsons Charles and David,b rother Wayne Wasney and sister Aileen Light. Al is also survived In laws Steve Both, Ronnie Both, Randy Both and their families and special nephew Harvey.

Al arrived in Atikokan in the mid 50's, and began working at Steep Rock Iron Mine, as an underground miner. Shortly after he met Helen and they were married in 1957. As a family many happy times were had camping at French Lake,The Pines, Finnalyson and Windy as well as a few road trips. Al bought his first snow mobile, a Polaris in 1967, this lead to many years involved in the local Sno Ho club, where he and Helen had a lot of fun to say the least. They had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary shortly before Helen passed in 2007. Al worked at Steep Rock until its closing, ending his career there as a Senior crew foreman. After the mines closed Al was involved in the site cleanup, he was proud to be a miner. He continued on working for many years after at MNR, MTO and other odd jobs, truck driving and pipelining, he never wanted to retire from working. Al and Helen decided to stay in Atikokan where they had many happy times camping, fishing and blueberry picking. They loved to go on day trips to the bush where they would cook lunch on a camp fire. The last few years Al enjoyed traipsing through the bush either by himself or with good friends Bob and Monty. Al continued to pick blueberries.
